According to acient Greek myths it all started at the wedding feast of Peleus, the king of Philia, and Thetis, a sea goddess. All the gods and goddesses were invited except Eris the goddess of discord. Eris was offended and tried to stir up trouble by sending a golden apple inscribed, "For the most beautiful." Three goddesses claimed by Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Paris the son of King Priam of Troy judged the dispute. He gave it to Aphrodite because she promised him Helen. The king went toward Helen to capture her to make her his own. Twin prophets Cassandra and Helenus tried to persuade Paris that bad events would occur, but Paris would not listen and he set off to capture his promised love in Sparta. When the husband of Helen left out of Sparta Paris captured Helen and Helens husbands wealth. Paris met Helen and they both fled toward Troy. Then a large expedition started against Troy to win Helen back. The Greek army included heroes such as Achillies, Ajax the greater, Nestor, and Odysseus. While in Troy, Paris and Helen got married to each other around 1200 B.C.
